So, I have a newer (got a respected competitor’s last year) pump sprayer but it’s not the best it’s has some flaws, I wanted a better one. RYOBI pulled through once again. To be completely honest, I am a RYOBI fan. I have numerous tools from them but there’s a reason for that; they build equipment that fits my needs and quality products. Now back to this battery-operated sprayer and I’ll add how it compares to my previous one. There’s very little prep work, attach the nozzle and snap in the battery (included plus the charger). My previous one took an hour or so to assemble mainly because the directions were not well thought out. This comes with a 2Ah battery which has a smaller profile than the 4.0Ah. Since I have plenty of the 4.0 ones, I put that in this as well which also fits in the compartment with plenty of room to spare. My previous sprayer was a hand pump and you were pretty much pumping continuously. That one also had an agitator that never stayed in place, it is useless. I adjusted the nozzle to a stream and it sprayed approx. 27 ft (pic doesn’t do it justice). The gallon/metric measurements are EASY to read (last one wasn’t). Two items that I found to be not to my liking but did not take away from my assessment; (1) when I release the trigger the pump still runs and thus you still have a continuous trickle of fluid come out, you need to reach the dial (well positioned) to turn off the unit if you are not going to spray immediately (2) the belt on the shoulder straps comes across the chest I’d prefer it to be lower, as a backpacker my whole life I’m accustomed to the belt being around the waist (I took the belt from an old backpack and substituted it here). Overall, I am very happy with this 4-gallon battery powered backpacker sprayer. If you are reading this review and you are shopping for a good quality, well built, sturdy and easy to use backpacker sprayer that requires much less work this one is my suggestion. Without hesitation I say it fits all my needs and expectations. I would not hesitate recommending this to family and friends. WELL done RYOBI!!!!

The Ryobi 18V Cordless 4 GAL Backpack Chemical Sprayer with 2 Ah Battery and Charger is my second Ryobi sprayer, My first was a 1 gallon model that I have used and still works well but I would have to always refill it to finish my spraying. This 4 GAL model is a new version of the older 4 GAL one sold previously. I decided on another Ryobi to be able to use the interchangable batteries. The backpack sprayer works well and is easy to maintain. The hose and wand are better quality than the 1 GAL model but the hose is also very stiff and not easily handled. Maybe over time it will become more flexible. It also has a power dial on the tank to adjust the power of the sprayer, not only at the nozzle. The straps for the backpack are easy to use but I wish there was a waist strap too (only a chest strap) as the unit slides down on my back when moving.

In the past, I used the one or two gallon sprayers that you commonly find in box stores. Hauling them around in both my front and back yards- even with straps – got to be a little too heavy for me now that I am getting up there in years. This backpack works well for me because I can strap it on and the weight is shifted to my back instead of my arms. Even though I will probably never carry more than one gallon of liquid, it is so much easier and comfortable. Spraying both my front and back yards is now easier and faster without the weight hindrance. Other things to like about it are (1) the padded straps, which don’t cut into my shoulders, (2) the handy clips to store the spray wand, (3) the included battery and charger that can be used with other Ryobi products, (4) the strainer on the top to keep out stray objects, and (5) the different nozzles that can be used for different spray patterns. This sprayer should last for a long time. It is durable and well-built. Best of all, the sprayer can be easily cleaned to eliminate any clogs. Definitely would recommend.

If you want to take care of your lawn and need to apply chemicals to a large area, this is the right tool for that job. My front yard was infected by nutsedge and it looks like they are really hard to get rid of. I have used nutsedge killer spray bottle to spot treat them, but they will just come back next year. I think it was because the treatment was not even. When the next summer comes, I’d like to add SedgeHammer, mixed with water, and used this backpack sprayer to kill nutsedge more evenly. The backpack is a little bit heavy, but the belt looks very comfy to put on (it has a think padding). I like the overall design. BTW, you get a charger and a 2A battery which is nice.

Bought this to apply micronutrients to my lawn. Works great, best value I’ve found. Simple to use and assemble. Only negative is the plastic wand, it works well but wish it was metal. I did modify it by painting the gallon numerals on the tank (and the 18V symbol)
