First Class Beans!
I have a Delongi Esam4000.b bean to cup machine and have tried many beans in it. I am a big lover of Costa’s Mocha Italia bean but its hard to find a reliable source of them as they do not offically sell them (last look was £29.50 per kg).
These beans (Lavazza super crema) are just as good, infact i would say better. They have a nice sweetness to them and even if you crunch one in the mouth straight from the bag they are not to bitter.
On my machine i have the grinder set to fine (2)and the dose set to max (bout 11g). The water i have set to about 30ml. These are the recommended settibgs on the bag.
The results are great, about 4mm of crema on top of a lush dark shot. Nice rich taste.
Single shot does a standard latte glass nicely and the milk does not drown it out.
Double shot does a flat white (in my “borrowed” costa flat white cup) nicely. Though anyone with the same machine will know how hard it is to texture milk with the wand as it cant be angled.
Overall for the price £11.49 when bought and a yeild of about 90 shots (11g each) working out at just under 13p a shot i would highly recommended this bean.

This coffee is certainly not for everyone. It is a strong, dark roast coffee made up with a mixture of both arabica and robusta beans. Arabica beans tend to have a sweeter, softer taste, with tones of sugar, fruit, and berries. Their acidity is higher, with that winey taste that characterises coffee with excellent acidity. Robusta, however, has a stronger, harsher taste, with a grain-like overtone and peanuty aftertaste. Good-quality robusta beans are used in traditional Italian espresso blends, at about 10-15%, to provide a full-bodied taste and a better foam head, often known as the crema.
In this regard especially, this blend of beans provides an excellent crema. But as hinted at earlier in my review, many might find this coffee too strong and perhaps on the bitter side.
Indeed rather like a Portugeuse espresso, known as a “bica”, even coffee aficionados may still reach for the sugar. In fact it is often said that many Lisbon locals claim that “Bica” is an acronym for “Beba isso com açúcar”, literally meaning “Drink this with sugar”.
Having becoming accustomed with the rich espressos in Portugal, this blend by Lavazza certainly replicates this experience.
The only drawback is the price which, at around £13+ a kilo, is a little expensive.

This is to Lavazza Rossa what a single malt is to a £20 blend – whereas Rossa is a solid, flavoursome and great all-rounder, it is clumsy in its dependable delivery of decent coffee flavour. The Tierra is a more refined beast with more fruity, floral flavours that the robusta of rossa blockades. With this blend, you get dark chocolate, vanilla and almost a slight liquorice note like you do from dark cocoa. It’s a superior flavour and one that suits darker, more roasted palates but is not bitter or acrid at all. It’s really decent coffee and a happy bridge between a “medium” and an “espresso” roast. I’d buy it again. Happy I did.

I have spent years refining my ‘go to’ coffee bean for my machine and settled on the the standard red bag Lavazza. Yes, there are some really nice ones out there at higher prices, but for a good quality all rounder, you can’t beat this for value….
I stumbled on this ‘Top Class’ one unintentionally and to be fair, was attracted by the blue and red bag. At a similar price to the other one, I gave it a go…. It is much better than the red bag. A more full flavour, so many more notes and depth. A moderate crème on top….. it is my relatively new ‘go to’ coffee bean.
Good long lasting date, foil packaged…. great value for money
