Why Play with a Sensory Table?
Sensory Exploration
Sand and water play introduce kids to new textures, temperatures, sights and sounds. Actions like splashing engage multiple senses at once, and encourage children to actively use their senses as they explore. With sand and water, every movement presents an opportunity to see, hear, and to feel something new.
STEM Learning
Early physics concepts like motion and flowing are present in sand and water play. Sensory toys with slides, spinners and funnels are a great way to teach kids about cause and effect. Incorporate learning into play by letting kids make predictions about what will happen when sand enters a spinner, or a rubber duck is placed on top of a water slide.
Language + Social Skills
Sensory sand and water toys help kids build important social skills like taking turns and experimenting with role play. This kind of play is also great for widening a child’s vocabulary, as they start using words like “splash”, “sand”, and “float”.
Physical + Motor Skills
Sand and water play are a great way to practice physical development. When your child pours water or sand from a bucket, they practice both physical dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Sensory toys like sand and/or water tables also help develop fine motor skills and the pincer grasp as kids practice squirting, stirring and squeezing different accessories while they play.
Play Together!
- Seaside Storytelling: Get creative with water play! Make up a story about the dinosaurs or other toys you’re playing with. Where are they from? What’s their favorite thing to do at the water table? See how silly the stories get as you build off of one another to add more details!
- Buried Treasure: Hide small toys in the sand and have your child dig them up! Make it harder by adding a time limit to see how many items they dig up before the clock runs out.
- Sensory Exploration: Instead of sand and water, fill the water table with dried pasta, beans, or rice to create a fun sensory play area to use indoors or out.
- Cruise Vacation: All of the dinosaurs are excited to start their cruise vacation! Make up stories for each character and talk about their favorite things to do aboard the sand and water table ship.
- Cause and Effect: Challenge your child to create a large tidal wave, and then a small one. Engage them by asking questions such as, “What happens to the water when it’s pushed hard?”, “Which tool works best to move the most water?”, and “Was that wave bigger or smaller than the one before?”.
