RYOBI introduces the 18V ONE+ HP Brushless Cordless Compact 1/2 in. Drill/Driver Kit with (2) 1.5 Ah Batteries, Charger, Bag, and Drill and Drive Kit (65-Piece). This kit was useful right out of the box because the batteries were lightly charged, and a PH2/Standard screwdriver bit was included. I was able to unpack the box and go right to work with one battery while the other battery was charging. This Ryobi ONE+ HP driver weighs 3 pounds with the 1.5Ah battery attached. I bought this after borrowing a driver. That driver weighed 4 pounds with its 20Wh battery attached (20Wh is 1.1Ah at 18V). The Ryobi driver feels good in my hand. The black rubber is comfortable, and, with the 1.5Ah battery snapped in place, it feels well balanced. It is quite petite, but definitely powerful. This driver is 8.5” tall (with battery) and 6.5” long. The borrowed driver is 9.5” tall (with battery) and 8.5” long. The chuck extends less than an inch beyond the front of the battery base. Therefore, I think a short extension for hard to reach bolts would be a good idea. The chuck has an audible and haptic click when it locks or unlocks. This is quite an improvement over the borrowed drill/driver which didn’t provide any feedback. I always wondered if I had tightened it enough. The borrowed driver has a powerful, low -pitched growl. This little Ryobi driver has a higher-pitched whine that is harder on the ears — a little more irritating. There are lock & unlock arrows, and the maximum bit size of ½ “ inch are printed right on the end of the chuck. The trigger has a plastic pin running through it. Push it one way for clockwise rotation, the other way for counterclockwise rotation, or leave it in the middle, locked position for storage . If you pull the trigger with the pin in its middle position, the LED light will turn on, but the chuck won’t spin. This unit has 23 different torque settings in addition to the highest setting with the Drill icon for heavy drilling. This unit has 2 speeds: Low for more power and High for faster work. The bag looks small (6”Dx8”Hx10”W), but it is only a little over half full with the driver, charger, 2 batteries, bit and manuals inside. There is definitely room for a case of bits & extensions, a little oil pen for drilling metal and a small container of wax for starting wood screws. You won’t need room for a work light because this driver has a built-in, LED light just above the battery. This Ryobi ONE+ High Performance Drill/Driver kit includes two 1.5Am batteries, but the batteries are not labelled ONE+ HP. You can purchase additional, lightweight, compact ONE+ batteries in 1.5Ah, 2Ah or 4Ah sizes or high power ONE+ HP batteries in 2Ah, 3Ah, 4Ah, 6Ah or 9Ah sizes. On the back of the handle, way down near the battery, there is a place to fasten a strap or lanyard. This might be useful if you want a shared driver to stay near the workbench. Ryobi also sells a thick, strong lanyard/wrist strap that can be used to hang the driver or even heavier One+ tools from a hook on the wall. It is a plastic assembly that clamps on like a very thin battery and has a flat lanyard or wrist strap with a snap lead rope clip at the end (like on a large dog’s leash). The borrowed driver had a built-in, bit holder in the base which my new driver doesn’t have, but there are small holes on each side of its base near the ONE+ logo. Home Depot carries a Ryobi Bit Holder (#A10BH01) and a Ryobi Belt Clip (#A10BC01) for use in these holes.
